European Film Gateway

europeanfilmgateway.eu gives users access to hundreds of thousands of film historical documents as preserved in European film archives and cinémathèques: photos, posters, programmes, periodicals, censorship documents, rare feature and documentary films, newsreels and other materials. Targeted at scientific researchers and the interested public alike, the EFG offers a look at and behind the scenes of filmmaking in Europe from the early days until today.

The portal was created within the EFG project that ran from 2009 through 2011. It was initiated by the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) and the Europeana Foundation and originally involved 22 partner institutions (16 archives, 6 other partners). The project was coordinated by the DFF and addressed a number of key issues for access to digital content, such as technical and semantic interoperability, metadata standards as well as best practices for rights clearance and IPR management of cinematographic works. EFG was a Best Practice Network funded by the European Union under the eContentplus programme.

The EFG project was followed by the EFG1914 project that ran from 2012 through 2014. 25 project partners plus 6 associated partners contributed to the project again led by the DFF. Goal of the EFG1914 project was the digitisation and online publication of over 700 hours of film from and about World War I. With more than 3,000 individual titles from the period searchable, EFG gives access to the largest WWI related film collection currently online. EFG1914 was supported by the European Union under the ICT-PSP.

The EFG is the official aggregator for the film archive domain for Europeana.eu, the EU digital platform for cultural heritage. Europeana gives access to millions of objects from museums, archives, libraries and audio-visual institutions, thus opening up a space for participation, innovation and creativity.
