Nemosine

The DFF is a partner in the EU-funded Nemosine project that aims to set new standards for the preservation and conservation of Europe’s audiovisual heritage. So-called “intelligent packaging” (innovative smart package solutions) will be developed, which will have a preventive or curative effect on the irreversible decomposition processes of films, photos and audio recordings. The starting point is cellulose-based carrier material, for example nitro and acetate films, which form a large part of the stock of European film archives. Unlike the conventional can used to store films, the intelligent packaging will be equipped with the latest technology, such as active acetic acid adsorbers and nanosensors that measure acetic acid, moisture, oxygen and nitrogen levels. If the material has already been damaged, natural antifungicides are released in a controlled manner. The aim of the project is to improve conventional storage methods, save energy costs and increase the service life of audiovisual objects.

The consortium consists of a total of 16 partners, including four archives, whose task is to define the requirements for intelligent packaging and validate the product. The DFF, together with Filmoteca Valencia, is responsible for the film sector.
