Rhizom Filmgeschichte

RHIZOM FILMGESCHICHTE is an innovative digital communication project. By autumn 2020, a sensual, intuitively operable web environment will be created that presents the first minutes of more than 100 German films throughout history, links them together by motivic and stylistic similarities, and invites users to explore the resulting rhizomatic links digitally. The project’s goal is to surprise users and make them more familiar with the artistic diversity of film. Curated paths and digital tools simultaneously provide insight into the stylistic means and narrative strategies of film – and to the fascination of the beginning of film as a special cinematic form.

An important resource and basis for the project is filmportal.de, which currently provides information on more than 98,000 films and 200,000 people in the film industry.

This project is supported by the ART MENTOR FOUNDATION LUCERNE and “experimente#digital – a cultural initiative of the Aventis Foundation”.

RHIZOM FILMGESCHICHTE is an innovative digital communication project. By autumn 2020, a sensual, intuitively operable web environment will be created that presents the first minutes of more than 100 works of German film history, links them together according to motivic and stylistic similarities, and invites users* inside to explore the resulting rhizomatic knotting digitally. Our goal is to surprise the users and make them familiar with the artistic diversity of the film. Curated paths and digital tools simultaneously convey backgrounds to the stylistic means and narrative strategies of film – and to the fascination of the beginning of film as a special cinematic form.

An important resource and basis for the project is filmportal.de, the flagship of the digital work of the German Film Institute, which currently provides information on more than 98,000 films and 200,000 people.

This project is supported by the ART MENTOR FOUNDATION LUCERNE and “experimente#digital – a cultural initiative of the Aventis Foundation”.
