Europe in Film
The City of Frankfurt am Main’s Coordination Office for EU Affairs is on a mission to bring the vibrant spirit of the “European city” Frankfurt more visible while making the European Union more approachable to its residents. To make this happen, they’ve joined hands with the DFF to present a curated collection of films with a European flair right up until the 2024 European elections. Join council member Eileen O’Sullivan and the Coordination Office for the screening of the French-Swiss production LA DÉRIVE DES CONTINENTS (AU SUD) at the DFF cinema, followed by a film discussion. The film will be shown in the original version with German subtitles.
About the film:
Nathalie works for the EU in a refugee camp in Sicily, where she is preparing for the state visit of Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron. Her son Albert, with whom she has a strained relationship, works as an activist for an NGO and is critical of her work. Natalie’s ex-lover works as a PR expert for the German Chancellor. Packaged as a tragicomic mother-son story, the film ironically explores the European approach to migration, bureaucracy and media coverage, while maintaining faith in a European, even global, community.

Nathalie arbeitet für die EU in einem Geflüchtetenlager auf Sizilien, wo sie den Staatsbesuch von Angela Merkel und Emmanuel Macron vorbereiten soll. Als wäre diese Aufgabe nicht schon stressig genug, trifft sie ihren Sohn Albert, zu dem sie eine zerrüttete Beziehung hat, da er als junger Aktivist für eine NGO arbeitet und somit ihrer Tätigkeit kritisch gegenübersteht. Zusätzlich taucht dann auch noch Natalies Ex-Geliebte auf, die als PR-Expertin für die deutsche Bundeskanzlerin arbeitet. Verpackt als tragikomische Mutter-Sohn-Geschichte verhandelt der Film auf ironische Weise den europäischen Umgang mit Migration, Bürokratie und medialer Berichterstattung, verliert dabei aber nicht den Glauben an eine europäische, gar eine globale Gemeinschaft.
