Festival of Central and Eastern European Film
Every year, goEast transforms the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden into one of the most important international locations for cinema from Central and Eastern Europe. goEast addresses both trade visitors and the local cinema audience with more than 100 feature, documentary and short films, which span seven festival days and at least as many sections. The festival aims to raise public awareness of the diversity of Central and Eastern European film, which despite its great success at international festivals is still underrepresented in regular cinemas. Presenting hand-picked programmes ranging from current film positions to film historical rarities, from experiments to art house and mainstream cinema made in Central and Eastern Europe, goEast always sees its work in the context of differentiated socio-political, film aesthetic and film theoretical debates. Designed as a dialogue forum between East and West, panels and workshops, lectures and film talks, as well as collaborations with other cultural and social institutions are an integral part of the festival. goEast particularly wants the next generation of filmmakers to benefit from the festival and offers numerous opportunities for networking, exchange and training, such as the EAST-WEST TALENT LAB.
Every year, goEast attracts around 400 trade visitors and around 12,000 cinema goers and welcomes renowned guests, including in the past years directors and stars such as Agnieszka Holland, Boris Khlebnikov, Ildikó Enyedi, Bence Fliegauf, Martina Gedeck, Julia Jentsch, Otar Iosseliani, Sergei Loznitsa, Jiří Menzel, Kira Muratova, Cristi Puiu, Hanna Schygulla, Jerzy Stuhr, István Szabó, Béla Tarr, Maria Schrader, Bohdan Sláma, Małgorzata Szumowska, Krzysztof Zanussi and many more.
In addition to the city of Wiesbaden and the state of Hesse, which have been the main sponsors of goEast since the festival was founded, other strong partners such as the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain, the BHF-BANK-Stiftung, ŠKODA AUTO Deutschland and 3sat have contributed to the festival’s success.
Bernd Naumann, president of the national film funding agency of Germany, has been the festival’s patron since 2016.
