What’s New in German Film?
Once a month, DFF and epd film present an outstanding German-language film, followed by a workshop discussion. In November, the acclaimed opening film of the “New German Cinema” section at this year’s Munich Film Festival, “BLACK BOX,” will be screened. Director Aslı Özge, originally from Istanbul and living in Berlin since 2000, has received recognition for her work. Her debut film “MEN ON THE BRIDGE” (2009) premiered at Locarno and Toronto and received awards including the Turkish Film Award. In addition, Özge’s first German-language feature film “AUF EINMAL” (2016) was awarded the Europe Cinemas Special Label at the Berlinale.

Es herrscht Ausnahmezustand in einem Berliner Innenhof: Aufgrund eines ungeklärten Vorfalls riegelt die Polizei alle Hofzugänge ab. Keiner darf mehr rein oder raus. Und niemand weiß warum. Welche Rolle spielt der neue Hausverwalter Johannes, der prompt an seinem ersten Arbeitstag die Mülltonnen versetzen ließ und mit einem Ei beworfen wurde? Die Bewohner:innen sind verunsichert, Gerüchte befeuern allmählich Ängste. Argwohn und Verdächtigungen greifen um sich. Die Hausgemeinschaft gleicht einem Mikrokosmos der Gesellschaft.
