Juan Tomás Ávila Laurel is one of the leading figures in the Equatorial Guinean literary scene. Following a hunger strike in protest against the dictatorial regime of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the writer has been in exile in Spain since 2011. Marc Serena’s EL ESCRITOR DE UN PAÍS SIN LIBRERÍAS combines various elements: The documentary creates a portrait of the author and accompanies him back from exile to his home country. At the same time, Serena examines the past of Equatorial Guinea under Spanish colonial rule and takes a critical look at current political and social developments in the country.
