WE in the Museum – Film in the City!

The cultural participation project aims to promote the exchange about cinema and film through different experiences and perspectives in seven formats in the period from July to November 2022. In the WE project, we call on Frankfurt residents from various migrant self-organizations to get actively involved and to help shape and develop both the DFF space and the neighborhoods as a meeting place for everybody. Partners of the initiative are groups such as the family education center “Al Karama” in Frankfurt’s Nordweststadt and “Über den Tellerrand Frankfurt”.

In the first event unit, five film patrons with international histories each present a film from their own personal perspectives that they consider worthy of preservation and that they would like to present to an audience on the big screen. The first two screenings took place in July at the DFF cinema: Together with film educator Julian Namé, film patron Nevin Bal Vagelakos presented the documentary CROSSING THE BRIDGE – THE SOUND OF ISTANBUL (DE 2005), Fatih Akin’s musical journey to Istanbul. One week later, Laura Palys and Brygida Goryluk presented ZIMNA WOJNA (Cold War, 2005) by Pawel Pawlikowski. After the screenings film discussions took place that were then continued in the cinema foyer.

In addition to the screenings, there are two “Behind the Scenes” tours as a further event format, which lead into the DFF and into Frankfurt’s city center. They are conducted jointly by film educator Julian Namé and the city guide Simone Rodriguez Stöhr. Again, the kick-off was in July 2022, with another tour to follow in the fall.

The formats tested in the “WE” project are to be incorporated into the DFF mediation program in the long term.

“WE” is part of the state program “WE – Diversity and Participation” of the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs and Integration.
