SCHACHNOVELLE

Vienna 1938: The lawyer Dr. Josef Bartok and his wife Anna plan their escape from the National Socialists to the United States – but they are too late. Bartok, who manages the assets of the Austrian aristocracy, is arrested by the Gestapo and taken to their headquarters at the Hotel Metropol. Gestapo chief Böhm wants the aristocrats’ money. Since Bartok remains silent, Böhm decrees months of solitary confinement, which drives the jurist to the brink of insanity. Only through a chess book does Bartok seem to find a saving refuge from the psychological torture.
