Jia Zhangke portrays the Chinese painter Liu Xiaodong: At the Three Gorges Dam, Liu captures the works on the world’s largest hydroelectric power station on canvas. Shortly afterwards, the surrounding city is flooded. Later, Jia accompanies the artist to Thailand, where he paints young women. DONG was created at the same time as STILL LIFE, but after its double premiere in Venice it remained in the shadow of the winning film of the Golden Lion.

Within four decades, the People’s Republic of China has transformed itself at breathtaking speed from an agricultural state to the world’s second largest high-tech economy: The films by Jia Zhangke, one of today’s most important Chinese directors, are seismograms of this transformation. Until July 2020, the Lecture & Film series will focus on Jia Zhangke’s work.
