Director Costa-Gavras about his film »Z«
Recorded in the DFF cinema on May 13th, 2022.
In 1963, the Greek opposition deputy Grigoris Lambrakis was murdered – the victim of a conspiracy that reached into the highest military and government circles. The case was turned into a factual novel by Vassilis Vassilikos, on which Costa-Gavras’ film is based. In the form of a thriller, Z tells how a young examining magistrate tries to solve the murder of a left-wing opposition politician and is exposed to increasing pressure from the police and the military. The film vividly captures the climate of repression in a pre-fascist country – it was intended as an indictment of the Greek obstructionist regime.
