“Wherever we go, we encounter history,” says Vera Chytilová in her frenetic documentary poem about the Czechoslovak capital titled PRAHA – NEKLIDNÉ SRDCE EVROPY (Prague, the Restless Heart of Europe). The film was part of a documentary series dedicated to important European cities (produced by Giorgio Perrali for Transfilm Roma), and Chytilová was the only female director in the group of male big names of European auteur cinema, together with Miklós Jancsó (Budapest), Manoel de Oliveira (Lisbon), Ermanno Olmi (Milan), Theo Angelopoulos (Athens).
The event was part of the “Lecture & Film” series Between Surrealism and Subversion: The Films of Vera Chytilová, which presented the director’s works with introductions by experts.
