Lecture on LOS OLVIDADOS (1950)

LECTURE & FILM: LUIS BUÑUEL // LOS OLVIDADOS (1950)

»Buñuel as Delinquent Director: LOS OLVIDADOS«

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Dudley Andrew (New Haven)

Recorded on 11 May 2023 at the cinema of the DFF.

LOS OLVIDADOS was the third feature film that Luis Buñuel made in Mexico after leaving Spain following Franco’s seizure of power, and it was the first feature film over which he had extensive artistic control. An unflinching look at the lives of young people in the slums of Mexico City, the film was controversial in Mexico but well received in Europe by film critics such as André Bazin. Dudley Andrew (New Haven) examines Buñuel’s film in terms of criminality, which he treats less as a problem than as a representational challenge for directors of world cinema, from De Sica to Truffaut.
