Workshop: MobileFilms

In this workshop, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of camera perspective and film editing, exploring their significance and practical applications, including in the context of smartphone filmmaking. We will use a specific example to illustrate these concepts: a short poker scene with multiple cuts and a voiceover. Participants will first watch this scene at the beginning of the workshop, focusing on camera techniques and editing nuances.

They will then have the opportunity to re-create the scene on their own, using their smartphones or tablets to capture the scene from multiple angles. Once they have captured these shots, we will guide them through the process of editing these different film clips together.

Through this hands-on experience, students will develop a deeper appreciation for the creative possibilities of their smartphone cameras. It’s worth noting that conventional smartphone filmmaking typically relies on a consistent first-person perspective from the filmmaker and minimal editing. However, this workshop will emphasize that there is a wide range of aesthetic possibilities beyond these norms.
