UN BRUIT QUI REND FOU is loosely based on Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, but also draws on Alain Robbe-Grillet’s novel La maison de rendez-vous, which in turn draws heavily on the scandalous novel of the time, The Story of O. Robbe-Grillet and de Clercq’s film, starring Fred Ward and Arielle Dombasle, skilfully plays with pulp and conspiracy elements against an exotic backdrop, reminiscent of an art-house version of a Jess Franco film: a deliberately elliptical, dreamlike crime story. Under the title “Constructed Dreams – Deconstructed Identity”, the DFF presents both feature films by Dimitri de Clercq. The Belgian-born filmmaker grew up in the Middle East, studied film direction in New York and works as a producer and director.
