…NICHT MEHR FLIEHEN

FRG 1954/1955, Director: Herbert Vesely
Cast: Xenia Hagman, Hector Mayro, Judith Folda

Experimental film by the Viennese Herbert Vesely, a signatory of the “Oberhausen Manifesto”. Flight is the topic. And apparently a man, a woman, a young girl and a little boy are on the run. Under the blazing sun, the two adults drive through a stony desert and take up residence in an abandoned train station – the man seems to be in bondage to the woman. In the infinity of the desert, their destiny is fulfilled with rape and murder. Finally, four policemen arrest the perpetrator. Close to existentialism, the film tries to illustrate the futility of human existence in surreal, absurd fragments. An exceptional work at the time of its creation, it was only appreciated by a small group of people. The reference to Albert Camus and especially to The Stranger (1942) can be found in numerous reviews and commentaries.
