A prophecy is made to the young Lola Montez that she will one day marry a king. After an attempt to poison the Spanish pretender to the throne, she is arrested as a suspect. However, she is able to convince the governor of Barcelona of her innocence and to persuade him to travel with her to Venice. Her profession as a dancer leads to travels throughout Europe, glamorous affairs with influential men, and social scandals. When her liaison with the Bavarian King Ludwig I threatens to lead to a political revolt, Lola flees to New York, where she ends up destitute and dies.
