European Film Gateway

europeanfilmgateway.eu provides access to hundreds of thousands of documents from the history of film as they are preserved in over 50 European film archives and cinematheques: photographs, posters, programs, periodicals, censorship documents, rare feature films and documentaries, newsreels and other materials. The EFG offers a glimpse into and behind the scenes of European filmmaking, from its beginnings to the present day, for scholars and the interested public alike.

The portal was created as part of the EFG project, which ran from 2009 to 2011. It was initiated by the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE) and the Europeana Foundation and originally involved 22 partner institutions (16 archives and 6 other partners). The project was coordinated by the DFF and addressed a number of key issues for accessing digital content, such as technical and semantic interoperability, metadata standards, as well as best practices for rights clearance and managing the IPR of cinematographic works. EFG was a best practice network with funding from the European Union’s eContentplus program.

EFG was followed by EFG1914, which ran from 2012 to 2014. Again led by the DFF, 25 project partners and 6 associated partners contributed to the project. The goal of EFG1914 was to digitize and make available online more than 700 hours of films from and about World War I. With more than 3,000 individual titles from the period searchable, EFG provides access to the largest collection of World War I-related films currently online. EFG1914 was supported by the European Union under the ICT PSP.

EFG is the official film archive aggregator for Europeana.eu, the EU’s digital cultural heritage platform. Europeana is a space for participation, innovation and creativity, providing access to millions of items from museums, archives, libraries and audiovisual institutions.
