THE CLEANERS shows that the control of the contents on social platforms is less an algorithmic but rather a human work: In Manila, so-called content moderators sift through, evaluate and, if necessary, delete the abysmal sediment of social networks – pornography, images of war and rape. The film shows the moderators at work for companies like Google or Facebook under traumatizing conditions. Due to confidentiality clauses in their contracts and economic pressure, those affected have no opportunity whatsoever to speak openly about their experiences and their effects.
