And they lived happily ever after – Gender roles in Disney Animated Films

Almost every day, people all over the world come into contact with Disney through series, comics, merchandising, restaurants and theme parks. Above all, however, it is the Disney animated films that are still very popular with young and old. In her lecture, Véronique Sina focuses on the (binary) gender model mediated by Disney animated films, which has been propagated in the so-called fairy tale and princess films for decades.

ENCHANTED
Verwünscht. USA 2007. D: Kevin Lima. Original language version with German subtitles.

Giselle lives in Andalasia and wants to marry her prince charming Edward. But soon she finds herself magically transported from fairyland to today’s New York City. ENCHANTED plays with the levels of reality between real and animated film and uses fairy tale film clichés in an ironic way. But for all Disney film lovers, the movie also tells a great love story with an enchanting soundtrack by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.

The exhibition The Sound of Disney. 1928-1967

Our special exhibition The Sound of Disney. 1928-1967 presents the sound world of Disney classics from August 7, 2020, through January 10, 2021. The exhibition explores the use of music, sounds and dialogues in the original films as well as in the various dubbed versions. It focuses on the period from the short Mickey Mouse cartoons and films from the popular SILLY SYMPHONIES series from the 1920s and 30s to the feature-length masterpieces created during Walt Disney’s lifetime (1901 – 1966): from SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (US 1937) to THE JUNGLE BOOK (US 1967).

Lecture: Dr. Véronique Sina (Media scholar, Cologne)

Film screening starts around 6 p.m..
