Anne Boleyn, the niece of the Duke of Norfolk, enters the service of Queen Catherine as lady-in-waiting. Anne is attracted to Henry VIII, but wants to remain loyal to her childhood friend Norris. When Henry offers her the crown, Anne finally agrees to marry him. Catherine is reluctant to get a divorce and the Pope refuses to give his consent. The king disregards this directive and breaks with the church – the foundation stone for the Anglican Communion is thus laid. Lubitsch’s lavishly produced historical film became an audience success in Germany and got Henny Porten and Emil Jannings an invitation to Hollywood.
