Due to a bet about the perfect murder, which their mutual friend fell victim to, police inspector Bärlach and his friend Gastmann become embittered enemies. Years later, the two meet again and an abysmal cat-and-mouse game begins, in which Bärlach finally wants to hunt down Gastmann. The literary adaptation of the novel of the same name by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, who also collaborated on the screenplay, is probably one of Maximilian Schell’s best-known works.
